for the kick off and the introduction of the food plat(e)form @ the gerrit rietveld academie marjolein was invited to share some food concepts and food art projects of de culinaire werkplaats to illustrate some aspects of the field of food art + design.

as food addresses all the senses eric made for the audience a bouquet of flowers out of strawberry paper. this way marjolein’s lecture did not limit itself to food for thought only.

the eat’inspiration dutch masters is part of our project ‘dutch icons’, in which we try to determine the dutch dna

during dutch masters we are in search of excellence. we take you on a journey along the works and ideas of some dutch golden age painters as well as several more contemporary dutch master talents that are active in all kinds of fields.

so perhaps we invite you to nibble on a rembrandt or van gogh. or… have a piece of a master singer or pianist…..

the eat’inspiration ‘dutch flower power’ (march 23 – june 25, 2017)


  • part of: our ongoing project ‘dutch icons’ in which we try to capture the dna of the dutch/the netherlands.


  • showcases and explores: the special and powerful relationship of “the dutch” and flowers over the centuries.
    • by creating 7 different eating experiences
    • inspired by artists, tulips, historical events, perfumes, paintings, technology, and economy.


  • on the image: one of the freestyle interpretations of floral still lifes we created; a tribute to floral still-life painting as a particular genre which achieved its greatest importance in the dutch golden age art.  and we learned that the english term still life derives from the dutch word stilleven




water is one of our most favourite inspirational sources, as it is an extremely versatile theme. during the last 9 years we have approached ‘water’ from various perspectives. 

this year we address water again with the eat’inspiration dutch water works. and while we were browsing through our images we stumbled upon a humble tribute to the watermelon we made various years ago. it is part of a project to showcase that a watermelon consists of a lot of healthy nutrients.

in other words … a watermelon is much more than water only
