ever nibbled on some tulips or sipped from a unique mix of dutch masters?

we are very keen to share our upcoming dutch adventure with the world. the next months all our food, art and design activities aim at exploring and defining the so-called Dutch DNA.

during this journey we will be addressing a selection of dutch icons and classics through eating experiences.

when & what.

from march 23, 2017 until the beginning of january 2018 you are more than welcome to participate in our journey along all kinds of dutch issues during a 4-part series of eatinspirations.

we will be creating different eat’inspirations, food narratives and eating experiences at the intersection of food, art + design which will result in a new abstract look at the netherlands, and showcases the features of the Dutch DNA in particular.

dutch icons is an ongoing research project of de culinaire werkplaats. marjolein and eric offer you through their one of a kind eating experiences a unique, abstract and contemporary view on The Netherlands and on the Dutch DNA in particular.

portfolio 2016: eat’inspiration dutch masters

for the eat’inspiration dutch masters 2016 we have created a 5 and 7 course menu.
one of the seven selected dutch masters on the menu is our most famous dutch golden age painter: rembrandt van rijn.

inspirational source:

  • the pendant wedding portraits of marten soolmans and oopjen coppit by rembrandt van rijn.

marten-en-oopjen

marten-en-oopjen-2

dish inspired by rembrandt van rijn

in short, the story:

  • the portraits were painted upon the occasion of the wedding of marten soolmans and oopjen coppit in 1634;
  • the subjects were painted individually, however, the portraits have been kept together since their inception;
  • the pendant wedding portraits were formerly owned by the rothschild family;
  • and they became jointly owned by the louvre museum paris and rijksmuseum amsterdam;
  • one important condition: the paintings should always travel and exhibit together.

interpretation:

  • it is about a marriage between two different personalities, and the present ownership is a kind of marriage between france and the netherlands;
  • 2 people: 2x en papillote with different fillings consisting of dutch and french ingredients become one dish by mixing the content of both parcels;
  • the parcels are connected by the infinity symbol: symbol for eternal life and the interaction of opposing powers.

oct 10 – dec 12, 2016: eat’inspiration the beauty of imperfection and more …

flyer-the-beauty-of-imperfection

in many of today’s western design, fashion, food and architecture you can discover the characteristics of japanese aesthetics and the japanese world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection (wabi-sabi).

also various japanese arts have been influenced by the acceptance and comtemplation of imperfection, constant flux and impermanence of all things. for example the appraisal of the beauty of imperfection can be found in the principles of

  • ikebana (the art of flower arrangements), japanese garden architecture & the art of bonsai (tray gardens), japanese pottery (raku) and the art of repairing pottery with gold (kintsugi),  the japanese tea ceremony, etc.

at an international level this is reflected in trends like imperfect design, diy, the revival of craftsmanship, and eco design. the eat’inspiration the beauty of imperfection and more …  is not about the japanese cuisine. it is a freestyle interpretation and exploration of the japanese way of thinking and the art of living.
