due to success we prolong the exhibition “beyond black” in our art space the storage room for the last time until september 16, 2018

art space the storage room is a project by marjolein wintjes of studio de culinaire werkplaats. here you can experience food like art and with all your senses, it is a place for sensorial and experiential food art + design.

“beyond black”; the exhibition is the first exhibition created by de culinaire werkplaats, and this exhibition is addressing in a very playful way various black matters. so you can experience black with all your senses. the exhibition consists of various sculptures, small installations, and … above all there are several interactive stations revealing all kinds of black stories.

sonos x quentin deronzier vernissage

mid october 2017 we were commissioned for a real fun food art project during amsterdam dance event (ade).

gabriel ercicia (creative agency gowtu) invited us to create food inspired by the works and projects of quentin deronzier for the visitors of the vernissage.

quentin deronzier is a french visual artist and creative director, best known for his surrealist and colorful album artworks and music videos. he blends conceptual messages with vibrant colors and iridescent textures.

the sonos x quentin deronzier vernissage was held at the pop up sonos house singel 80. the exhibition was part of the ade 2017 programme.


100% vegan for press launch + opening LUSH flagship store amsterdam


  • in march 2017 we were invited by LUSH fresh handmade cosmetics to create the catering of the press launch (march 16th) and the opening (march 17th) of their flagship store at kalverstraat amsterdam.

  • 100% vegan
  • colourful, playful and inspired by their products like the bath oils and perfumes, which are only available at this flagship store.
  • flowers.
  • easy to eat and drink. 

sept 26, 2017: marjolein speaker kick off food plat(e)form @ gerrit rietveld academie

for the kick off and the introduction of the food plat(e)form @ the gerrit rietveld academie marjolein was invited to share some food concepts and food art projects of de culinaire werkplaats to illustrate some aspects of the field of food art + design.

as food addresses all the senses eric made for the audience a bouquet of flowers out of strawberry paper. this way marjolein’s lecture did not limit itself to food for thought only.

the storage room amsterdam,  a new project by studio de culinaire werkplaats, proudly presents:

  • the exhibition beyond black; black matters for all your senses.

the storage room is

  • world’s 1st project space dedicated to sensorial food art + design;
  • an initiative by marjolein wintjes (food conceptualists + co-founder of studio de culinaire werkplaats).

interactive exhibition beyond black.

the exhibition beyond black addresses in a playful and twistful way several ‘black matters‘ and goes beyond the concept of black as a colour. for beyond black marjolein made a selection of the black related conceptual food and eating experiences created by her for studio de culinaire werkplaats.

furthermore, she added a few new interpretations as well. so there are sculptures, small installations, collages, videos, etc. and … 5 experiential stations to make you meet black with more than your eyes only. this time you may look and touch.

you can nibble, sniff, sip, touch, chew, slurp, and…….. to give you a small impression:

  • black pearls: to try out and discover some of the new luxuries (experiential installation).
  • blacks in disguise invites you to explore and discover the taste of various blacks (hanging installation).
  • a bouquet of black addresses your nose with a selection of fragrances of black (wall piece).
  • a collection of black stills are a reflection on the end of food (collages). also presented in an experiential way.
  • colourful black showcases the colourfulness of vegetal blacks.
  • the couple’s motto is ‘food equals fashion’, so there is a black fashion icon/statement (installation) as well;
  • and there are some interpretations black and emotions,
  • etc. …

so the exhibition beyond black is about:

  • the beauty of nature and black plant power in particular;
  • the vulnerability of the eco-system;
  • the sensorial, associative, and symbolic powers of black
  • and new (eating) rituals.

why black?

  • black was the 1st theme explored at studio de culinaire werkplaats by marjolein and eric more than 8 years ago
  • ever since they are known as the people of the black food and black became one of their signatures.
  • during the past years they have discovered over 90 vegetal black ingredients,
  • and they explored numerous black issues in food concepts and/or food art installations, even political matters.

portfolio: open source software meets vincent van gogh

after-party github


github san francisco invited us to design and execute a food art concept. this project is without any doubt one of our most favourite projects of the first half year 2016.

the brief.

  • what: create an unconventional f & b concept
  • occasion: the after-party of the github satellite 2016 event
  • venue: van gogh museum amsterdam
  • commissioner: github
  • main sponsor: ibm
  • expected guests: approx. 350
  • theme: the satellite event was all about open source software

the result. 

  • we created a f & b concept in which open source software developement and vincent van gogh would meet.
  • for the food part we designed and built 3 interactive food art installations: a potato installation, a landscape of 6,5 meters, and a installation of “breakables”. the installations were a reflection of  3 distinct features that you can distinguish in the art work of van gogh, and each installation was expressing various parallels and cross overs between the ideas and works of van gogh + open source software development.

for the execution of this concept we teamed up with famous flavours.

we are working on a next generation of edible fabrics. to add new samples to our collection of edible fabrics/paper. this time a tribute to red cabbage; part of our experiments and commissions in the context of food = fashion.

black is one of our signatures. outside our venue we are known as ‘the people of the black food’.

as we are in the process of starting a new venture ‘The Storage Room’, an art gallery where you can experience food like art, we thought it is was an interesting idea to pick up -after more than 7 years- our black theme again.

for the eat’inspiration the new black we created a selection of ‘black matters’. and hereafter you find the most favourite 5 dishes of many others that made it to a plate.

    • black star: our personal tribute to david bowie.
    • the black list: we shared our blacklist with our guests.  in our first exhibition ‘beyond black’ at our new project space we will reveal in a non edible way our blacklist;
    • black tuesday; the wallstreet crash in 1929 inspired us to this creation. a history teacher that dined at our venue durning this eat’inspiration explained that we had the wrong day. it should be ‘black thursday’. however, we learned that this crash was a big process that emcompassed several days. and our black tuesday was about the final ending, and black thursday was all about the beginning of this process.
    • colourful black: with this dish we try to share what we have learned from our first theme ‘black’. black is not 1-dimensional, it is very colourful.
    • black pearls: these are scarce. and we discovered there are many black commodities that are scarce. scarcity & black were the input for our dish.

creating an opening between studio de culinaire werkplaats and the storage room

we are very pleased to share with you the status of our new venture ‘project spacethe storage room‘.

after facing a lot of red tape and the usual setbacks we finally tackled the most important hurdle. at last our contractor realized the opening between our studio/restaurant and our new art gallery. this created some uneforeseen problems ……..
a lot of re-painting has to be done, and several pieces of art have to be created again.

we are looking forward to welcoming you soon to world’s first art gallery where you can experience food like art and with all your senses.
