until feb 05, 2017: interactive food art exhibition “beyond black” @ the storage room amsterdam

interior of the storage room amsterdam

the storage room amsterdam,  a new project by studio de culinaire werkplaats, proudly presents:

  • the exhibition beyond black; black matters for all your senses.
  • from nov 24, 2016 – feb 05, 2017

the storage room is

  • world’s 1st project space dedicated to sensorial food art + design;
  • an initiative by marjolein wintjes (food conceptualists + co-founder of studio de culinaire werkplaats).

interactive exhibition beyond black.

the exhibition beyond black addresses in a playful and twistful way several ‘black matters‘ and goes beyond the concept of black as a colour. for beyond black marjolein made a selection of the black related conceptual food and eating experiences created by her for studio de culinaire werkplaats.

furthermore, she added a few new interpretations as well. so there are sculptures, small installations, collages, videos, etc. and … 5 experiential stations to make you meet black with more than your eyes only. this time you may look and touch.

you can nibble, sniff, sip, touch, chew, slurp, and…….. to give you a small impression:

  • black pearls: to try out and discover some of the new luxuries (experiential installation).
  • blacks in disguise invites you to explore and discover the taste of various blacks (hanging installation).
  • a bouquet of black addresses your nose with a selection of fragrances of black (wall piece).
  • a collection of black stills are a reflection on the end of food (collages). also presented in an experiential way.
  • colourful black showcases the colourfulness of vegetal blacks.
  • the couple’s motto is ‘food equals fashion’, so there is a black fashion icon/statement (installation) as well;
  • and there are some interpretations black and emotions,
  • etc. …

so the exhibition beyond black is about:

  • the beauty of nature and black plant power in particular;
  • the vulnerability of the eco-system;
  • the sensorial, associative, and symbolic powers of black
  • and new (eating) rituals.

why black?

  • black was the 1st theme explored at studio de culinaire werkplaats by marjolein and eric more than 8 years ago
  • ever since they are known as the people of the black food and black became one of their signatures.
  • during the past years they have discovered over 90 vegetal black ingredients,
  • and they explored numerous black issues in food concepts and/or food art installations, even political matters.

the storage room.

all the projects and works of studio de culinaire werkplaats inspire you to re-think the future, and the dinner plate of the future in particular.

with this latest project “art space: the storage room” a long-cherished dream of marjolein comes true. at the storage room she can share her conceptual approach on food and the act of eating, by presenting food like art and in a more sensorial way.

this art space will address all kinds of themes and issues using the sensorial qualities of food + the act of eating.

exhibition beyond black

  • period: nov 24, 2016 – feb 05,2017
  • what: black matters for all your senses.

opening hours

  • thu – fri – sat – sun: 1 pm – 6 pm
  • outside opening hours.
    • by appointment only.
    • groups:  min. 5 persons.

where – contact information.

  • the storage room: j.m. kemperstraat 80, 1051 tv  amsterdam
  • entrance through studio de culinaire werkplaats (corner fannius scholtenstraat 10 and j.m. kemperstraat 80).
  • phone: +31(0)6 39 76 9955 (marjolein wintjes)  or via de culinaire werkplaats +31 (06)54 64 65 76

admission fee

  • we kindly ask a donation of approx. € 7,50 per person;
  • why :
    • viewing the exhibition is only part of your visit, you taste, sniff, touch, etc., as well. so you consume part of the exhibition literally;
    • the exhibition is created with temporary materials so the exhibited sculptures, installations, have to be renewed/refreshed several times during the exhibition period.

pre announcement: march-april 2016 experience the new black

eating experience the new black

in march 2016 we will launch with the new black a new and unique way of experiencing food.

black was the first theme to present our view on food to the public. ever since we are known outside our venue as ‘the people of the black food‘. …. and that is why we once again choose black to be our kick-off theme for this new type of eating experience.

more soon…..

portfolio: conference design & innovation

eating experience bubble house

commissioned by shell we created an interactive morning eating experience for a group of international ceo’s who were participating in a conference about design & innovation.

the experience started with a presentation about the design & innovation strategies of shell, and various strategies in general.

thereafter marjolein introduced studio de culinaire werkplaats and the way here materials, techniques, etc. are explored in the quest of finding new tastes, new textures, new food pairings and new ways of eating.

for this morning session the inspirational source was dutch design. we selected the following 5 dutch design projects as inspirational source for the various eating experiences:

  • viktor & rolf: project zen garden
  • atelier nl: projects drawn from clay and fundamentals
  • jongeriuslab: coloured vases #3
  • dus architects: projects bubble building + 3d printed canal house
  • raaaf: vacant.nl

the session was closed with lessons learned.

dutch masters & master pieces

no-fingerprints by de culinaire werkplaats

in search of excellence is the 2nd eat’inspiration of our project ‘dutch icons revisited‘. on the image: no fingerprints.

no fingerprints is a tribute to a the dutch master burglar Aage Meinesz (aage m.), well known in the 70ties for his well prepared bank robberies using a thermal lance. at the end he was caught, but managed to escape. and… to this day the world is figuring out how he managed to do this.

the eat’inspiration ‘in search of excellence’ is the 2nd eat’inspiration of our project ‘dutch icons revisited‘.

the inspirational theme ‘dutch masters’ was triggered by our project during museums at night amsterdam at the van gogh museum.
the notion ‘master’ refers for us to all kinds of talents, skills and types of excellence. so for this eat’inspiration we selected 5 different expertises.
so for this eat’inspiration we selected 5 different dutch master talents. the eat’inspiration starts with an eat’cocktail inspired by a dutch master burglar, aage m. the other masters we addressed: rembrandt van rijn (painter), rem koolhaas (architecture), iris van herpen (fashion design), marcel wanders (product design).

exploring ‘how flat is the netherlands’

waddensea area

the eat’inspiratie anything but flat? has its focus on the question “how is flat is the netherlands?”. so we have selected randomly five iconic dutch landscapes of which we created edible impressions:

  • wadden sea area. in this area water, salt, sand, air and foam come together. for us the opportunity to showcase all kinds of dutch sea vegetables.
  • heathland (drenthe area). in this dish we merge the beautiful heath landscape with the peasant life as depicted in the early paintings by van gogh, bartje’s famous words “i do not pray for brown beans’ in a well known dutch book for children, and the era of the dolmens.
  • arable landscape. the netherlands is a country of growers and farmers. so in our opinion an arable landscape can not be missed out, so we created a landscape on which dutch root vegetables flourish.
  • the hilly landscape of limburg. this eat’impression is guided by a combination of elements, both present and past: coal mining, viniculture, beer and loess (limburg clay with a typical yellow-red color).
  • urban landscape. in the netherlands the amount of nature is decreasing and cities are claiming more and more space. in large cities one can spot significant changes in the street view. one of these changes has inspired us to a dish, a dish with a wink.

the question ‘how flat is the netherlands’ has yielded many interesting discussions. the 5 eat’impressions turned out to be a helpful approach to create a more nuanced view of dutch landscapes.

now we are in the process of visualising the result of the central question ‘how flat is the netherlands’ for the exhibition “dutch icons revisited.
