“the dutch” and flowers, tulips in particular, are often mentioned in the same breath. this special connection goes way back to the dutch golden age. during this era many new, exotic flowers and plants were introduced in the netherlands. at the peak of the golden age tulip bulbs even caused the very first speculative bubble, known as tulip mania.

today, the netherlands is often referred to as the “flower shop of the world”.  

flowers are connected to many areas of our everyday life: for instance art, craft, design, fashion, spirituality, emotion, symbolism, traditions, folklore, commerce, science, technology, botany, etc. 

for many centuries artists, artisans, botanists, gardeners, flower growers and trades men are inspired by all kinds of flowers and plants. this we have taken as the perspective for our eat’inspiration ‘flower power’.

ever nibbled on a masterful forgery? spooned out a bubble? had a “natural” beauty on your plate? grab your chance and join us for this one of a kind eatinspiration ‘fake or real?’ and explore with us the flimsy line between fake and real.

currently two seemingly opposite trends are operating side by side:

  • real: 
    • on the one hand one notices there is a strong urge for a pure, honest, transparent, natural, authentic way of living; in other words a search for a real, a genuine life.
  • fake: 
    • on the other hand the world of fakeness ruling. in our daily lives we stumble over fake facts, fake images, fake identities, fake foods, etc., etc. nowadays we even have awards for the biggest cheaters and fakers. 

after a closer look you will notice that we treasure both authenticity and phoniness at the same time, so  fake + real are in essence two sides of the same coin.

FROM AMSTERDAM WITH LOVE: VOC SPICED and MARINATED TULIP BULBS (seasonal edition)

searching for something typical dutch or souvenir from amsterdam? in that case, our seasonal edition of spicy tulip bulbs could be the thing you are looking for.

our potted tulip bulbs have the size of silverskin onions, are organically grown and marinated in a special spice blend that refers to the VOC past of the Netherlands during the dutch golden age.

in 2017 we worked a large project ‘dutch icons revisited‘. tulips and the dutch are inextricably connected. so for this project we created a dish in which tulip bulbs are the star of the dish, and this dish was all about the story ‘how the tulip became one of the best dutch export products’.

after a tulip bulb tasting we have selected 2 out of 7 varieties of tulip bulbs especially for this dish. 

at special request of our guests we are in the process of capturing the bulbs of the smallest tulip variety in jars.

so …. in the last months we have been peeling and marinating a couple of thousands of tulip bulbs. and …. at this very moment we are awaiting for the jars to arrive. we expect that this first edition of spicy bulbs will become available in our shop at the end of december 2017 or the beginning of january 2018 . 

these tulip bulbs in a jar are a seasonal product.

  • part of our project ‘dutch icons revisited’ in which we explore using regularly changing themes: what makes the dutch dna.

 

  • eat’inspiration dutch masters III. 
    • most people link the concept of dutch masters to our dutch golden age painters. however, we believe that we have far more master talents in the netherlands than painters only and in different periods. so we stretched the concept.
    • for this new series of dutch masters we created 7 dishes inspired by 7 different master talents. for instance: geert jan jansen (art forger + painter), iris van herpen (fashion artist/designer), etc.

 

  • in the image. a classic dutch pudding (vegan version) flambé. this dish is inspired by and a tribute to the project ‘where there is smoke’ by maarten baas.

‘the dutch’ and water are closely linked. for ‘the dutch’ water has even become part of their cultural identity.

to give a small impression:

water management runs in the genes of ‘the dutch’. draining their country and keeping their feet dry is a process the dutch started centuries ago and continue to do to this day.

in winter time -for instance- the dutch conquer the frozen water with their ice skates.

and … during the dutch golden age commerce was thriving because rivers and seas offered the opportunity to travel to all parts of the world, which influenced the dutch cuisine.
